T&D (Transmission & Distribution)

Definition

Transmission and Distribution (T&D) are the two stages that move electricity from where it is generated to where it is used. Transmission carries electricity over long distances using high-voltage power lines, while Distribution delivers it over short distances using lower-voltage lines to homes, businesses, and factories. T&D acts as the transportation network of the Electric Power System (EPS), connecting power plants and DERs to consumers.

The Problem That Led to It

When electricity was generated only by large power plants (EPS), it often had to travel hundreds of kilometres to reach consumers. Sending electricity directly from a power plant to every home would require huge cables, waste energy, and be extremely expensive.

Engineers divided this journey into two stages:

  • Transmission moves electricity efficiently over long distances.
  • Distribution safely delivers it to individual users.

This created an organised and efficient way to supply electricity across entire countries.

What Problem It Solves

T&D:

  • Transports electricity efficiently.
  • Reduces energy losses during long-distance travel.
  • Delivers safe voltage levels to homes and businesses.
  • Connects both large power plants and modern DERs to consumers.

What Happens If Not Used

Power plants could only supply nearby areas. Delivering electricity over long distances would become inefficient, expensive, and unreliable.

Easy Wording

Transmission is the highway for electricity. Distribution is the local street that brings electricity to your home.

Layman Example

Think of an online shopping order.

  • A factory makes the product.
  • A highway carries it to your city (Transmission).
  • Local roads deliver it to your house (Distribution).

Electricity follows the same journey.

Technical Example

A rooftop solar system (DER) can also send electricity into the distribution network because it is connected close to consumers rather than directly to the transmission system.

Limitation

T&D explains how electricity travels, but it does not explain how a small area can continue operating if the main grid fails.

Solution

The next concept is Microgrid (MG). A microgrid is a small local power system that can operate with the main grid or independently during outages, improving reliability and resilience.
