Static routing
Definition
Static routing is manually mapping a fixed path for network traffic. In the flow of User → Router → Internet, it acts as the router's permanent roadmap, directing traffic to specific destination IPs.
What Problem It Solves
It prevents routers from guessing where to send data. It removes the need for complex, resource-heavy automatic discovery protocols in predictable networks.
What Happens If Not Used
Without it, a router cannot reach networks outside its immediate neighborhood, causing data packets to get lost or dropped.
Easy Wording
It is like writing permanent driving directions on a sticky note and taping it to your router.
Layman Example
Instead of using a live GPS, you follow a handwritten note: "To get to the farm, always turn right at the red barn."
Technical Example
- Flow: Client Browser →→ Gateway Router →→ Web Server.
- Before: Gateway Router receives a request for a secure web server at
192.168.2.10but drops it because the destination is unknown. - After: You manually add a route: "For 192.168.2.0/24, go to 10.0.0.2". Now, the Gateway instantly forwards the request straight to the server.
The Problem: Static routes cannot adapt to changes. If a physical cable breaks or a transit router goes offline, the static route remains active, sending data packets into a "black hole" where they are lost. It also becomes impossible to manage manually as a network grows to dozens of routers.
The Solution Needed: To fix this, we need Dynamic Routing (using protocols like OSPF or BGP). Dynamic routing allows routers to talk to each other, automatically detect link failures, and dynamically calculate alternative paths in real-time.
