Max Age Timer
Definition
The Max Age Timer is the maximum time a switch waits without receiving a BPDU before assuming the Root Bridge or path has failed. By default, it is 20 seconds.
The Problem That Led to It
A single missed BPDU should not immediately trigger a topology recalculation.
What Problem It Solves
It prevents unnecessary topology changes caused by temporary message loss.
What Happens If Not Used
The network could constantly recalculate its topology due to minor communication delays.
Easy Wording
It's how long a switch waits before saying, "The Root Bridge is probably gone."
Layman Example
If your friend doesn't reply for a few seconds, you don't assume they've disappeared. You wait for a reasonable amount of time before deciding something is wrong.
Technical Example
The Root Bridge normally sends a BPDU every 2 seconds. If no BPDU is received for 20 seconds, the switch assumes the path or Root Bridge has failed and starts a new STP election.
Limitation
Waiting 20 seconds delays recovery after a real failure.
Solution
Rapid STP (RSTP) detects failures much faster, reducing network downtime.
