IPv4 Header – Destination IP Address Field (32 bits)

Definition

  • The Destination IP Address field contains the IPv4 address of the device the packet is trying to reach.
  • It is the most important field routers use to decide where to forward the packet next.

What Problem It Solves

  • The Internet contains billions of devices. Routers need a destination address to determine the correct path for each packet.
  • The Destination IP acts like the packet's delivery address.

What Happens If Not Used

  • Routers would have no idea where to send the packet.
  • The packet would be dropped because there would be no forwarding decision to make.

Easy Wording

It tells the network where the packet needs to go.

Layman Example

Imagine sending a parcel. The courier checks the recipient's address, not the sender's, to decide where to deliver it. The Destination IP works the same way.

Technical Example

Request Flow:

  • Your browser requests https://example.com.
  • DNS returns the web server's IPv4 address.
  • Your computer places that address in the Destination IP Address field.
  • Each router reads the Destination IP, checks its routing table, and forwards the packet to the next hop.
  • The packet eventually reaches the correct web server, which processes your request.

Limitation: The Destination IP identifies where the packet should go, but it doesn't provide extra capabilities such as recording the route, timestamps, or security information. Options, adds these optional features when needed.
