IED (Intelligent Electronic Device)
Definition
IED (Intelligent Electronic Device) is a specialised smart electronic device designed specifically for electrical power systems. It is installed alongside electrical equipment such as transformers, generators, transmission lines, circuit breakers, and busbars to measure electrical parameters, monitor equipment health, protect the equipment from electrical faults, and communicate this information to higher-level systems such as RTUs and SCADA. Unlike traditional substations that required separate devices (voltmeter, ammeter, protection relay, recorder, etc.), an IED combines these functions into a single intelligent device. In the overall workflow, Electrical Equipment → IED → RTU → SCADA → Operator, where the IED acts as the local intelligent interface between the equipment and the monitoring/control system. In simple words, an IED is an all-in-one smart device that measures, protects, monitors, and communicates for a specific piece of electrical equipment.
The Problem That Led to It
Before IEDs, every important electrical device required several separate instruments.
For example, one transformer needed:

Problems with this approach:

That became the IED.
