Definition
The electric field is an invisible force established throughout a circuit by voltage, acting as the immediate push that makes electrons drift.
The Problem That Led to It
A battery cannot physically grab and move every distant electron in a long wire. Systems needed a way to transmit energy and apply force instantly across an entire circuit.
What Problem It Solves
It instantly transmits the battery's electrical pressure across the connected circuit, moving all free electrons simultaneously.
What Happens If Not Used
The battery's voltage would remain isolated at its terminals, and electrons would never begin moving.

While the field propagates almost instantly, the individual electrons only drift very slowly through the wire

This resulting collective drift of electrons is called Current, which is the actual flow that powers devices.
