Definition

A battery chemically separates charges to create voltage (potential difference). It is step one in preparing energy for circuits.

The Problem That Led to It

To transmit power, systems needed electrical pressure. Naturally, charges sit neutrally without pressure, just like water resting in flat tanks

What Problem It Solves

It converts chemical energy into electrical potential energy, giving each coulomb the voltage to do work.

What Happens If Not Used

No pressure difference is created, meaning current will not flow.

Easy Wording

It is the process of pulling apart charges to build the electrical pressure that powers devices.

Layman Example

Pumping water to a higher tank to create pressure.

Technical Example

Before: Battery terminals have no pressure difference.

After: Chemical work moves electrons to the negative terminal, establishing voltage (energy per coulomb)

Limitation

It only creates the conditions for current; it cannot move charges unless a completed circuit exists.

Solution

Connecting a circuit allows this voltage to produce an Electric Field that actually moves the electrons.
