AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure)
Definition
AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) is a network of smart meters, communication systems, and utility software that enables two-way communication between electricity consumers and the utility company. Unlike traditional electricity meters that only record energy usage and require manual reading, AMI automatically collects consumption data, sends it to the utility, and can also receive commands from the utility. The Problem That Led to It
Before AMI, every home had a traditional electricity meter.
Every month:
- A meter reader visited each house.
- Read the meter manually.
- Sent the reading to the utility.
- The utility generated the bill.
Problems:
- Expensive.
- Slow.
- Human reading errors.
- No real-time usage information.
- Customers only discovered high electricity usage after receiving the bill.
Utilities wanted a system that could automatically read meters and communicate with customers.
That solution became AMI.
What Problem It Solves
AMI replaces manual meter reading with smart meters.
It allows:

- Outage detection.
- Remote connection/disconnection (where supported).
- Better demand management.
Unlike old meters, communication is two-way:
- Home → Utility: Sends electricity usage.
- Utility → Home: Sends configuration or control commands.

Without AMI:

- Faults may go unnoticed.
- Customers cannot easily monitor their own usage.

Limitation
AMI focuses on the consumer side of the power system.
It does not:
- Protect transformers.
- Control substations.
- Monitor transmission stability.
- Replace SCADA, RTUs, IEDs, or PMUs.
Its primary role is smart metering and customer-utility communication.
Because AMI relies on communication networks, it also introduces cybersecurity concerns such as unauthorized access, data manipulation, and privacy risks—topics that become important later when studying CPES security.
